What to see and do
Bali: beyond paradise
Bali has three main faces. Ubud, in the island's heart, is the cultural capital: terraced rice paddies, Hindu temples, Balinese art galleries, and the world's best yoga and wellness offering. The south (Seminyak, Canggu) is modern Bali: rooftop bars, specialty cafes, and the best fusion gastronomy. Kuta and Legian offer surf tourism and nightlife. Gili Islands (2h by ferry) have crystal-clear waters without cars. Mount Batur (1,717m) is climbed at night to see sunrise from the crater.
Where to stay
Ubud for nature, culture, and wellness. Seminyak for luxury, design, and gastronomy. Canggu for surfers, digital nomads, and specialty coffee. Kuta for the most affordable and youthful tourism. Nusa Dua for luxury resorts with private beach.
Getting around
Rent a scooter (from 5€/day) to explore freely — the most local way. Private drivers are affordable for day trips. Grab works in tourist areas. Ngurah Rai airport is in the south, near Kuta and Seminyak.

Travel tips
Temple respect
Bring a sarong to enter temples — most lend them. Don't enter during ceremonies without invitation.
Currency
1€ ≈ 17,000 IDR. Withdraw from BCA or Mandiri ATMs (lower fees). Tourist taxis multiply prices — use Grab.
Water purification ceremony
Melukat, ritual purification at Tirta Empul Temple (sacred springs), is a spiritual experience open to respectful visitors.
Gastronomy
Nasi Goreng
Fried rice with egg, soy sauce, and sambal. Indonesia's national dish, present in all warungs (local restaurants).
Babi Guling
Whole roasted suckling pig with Balinese spices. Only in non-halal restaurants — the definitive Hindu-Balinese culinary experience.
Sate lilit
Fish or mixed meat skewers with grated coconut and spices. The Balinese version of satay, more fragrant than the common version.
