What to see and do
Cancún: sun and civilization
Cancún offers two experiences in one. The Hotel Zone is a 22km strip with the world's best all-inclusive hotels, stunning beaches like Playa Delfines, and the best Mexican Caribbean. But Downtown Cancún and El Pueblo show the authentic Mexican face. Nearby: Chichén Itzá (one of the 7 Modern World Wonders), Riviera Maya cenotes, Tulum with its cliffside ruins, Isla Mujeres, and Cozumel for world-class diving.
Where to stay
Hotel Zone for all-inclusive beachfront resorts. Downtown for tighter budgets and local atmosphere. Puerto Morelos for quieter, more local tourism. Playa del Carmen for the boutique, more sophisticated version of the Mexican Caribbean.
Getting around
Bus R-1 runs the entire Hotel Zone and reaches Downtown (11-13 MXN). Taxis are plentiful — negotiate the price first. Ferries to Isla Mujeres depart from Puerto Juárez. For Chichén Itzá, organized tours are the most practical option.

Fish tacos
