The heart of Morocco

Marrakech is Africa's most visited city. The Medina (UNESCO Heritage) is a labyrinth of souks organized by trade: dyers, tanners, spice merchants, goldsmiths. Djemaa el-Fna Square transforms at sunset into the world's greatest free spectacle: snake charmers, Gnawa musicians, storytellers. Menara and Majorelle gardens (with the Yves Saint Laurent Villa) are oases of serenity. Riads — traditional mansions with inner courtyard — are the most authentic way to stay.

Where to stay

The Medina for the most authentic riad experience. Gueliz (new city) for modern hotels and boutiques. Hivernage for luxury pool resorts. Palmeraie for glamour and palm-lined villas.

Getting around

The Medina is explored on foot — cars can't enter. Tuk-tuks and horse-drawn carriages (calèches) are picturesque. Petit taxis (red) have fixed fares. For the airport, taxi (~150 DH) or bus 19 (20 DH).

Travel tips

🧭

Navigating the Medina

The Medina is a labyrinth. Use Google Maps but accept getting lost — it's part of the experience. Kids offering to guide usually earn commission at shops.

🛍️

Bargaining

Bargaining is mandatory in the souks. Start offering 30-40% of the initial price. Smile and be firm.

👗

Dress code

Respect local culture by covering shoulders and knees in the Medina. Riads and tourist areas are more flexible.

Gastronomy

Tagine

Slow-cooked stew in a conical clay pot with lamb, chicken, or vegetables. Fragrant with turmeric, ginger, and coriander.

Friday Couscous

Couscous is Morocco's national dish. The best is eaten on Fridays at local family homes or traditional restaurants.

Bastilla

Filo pastry filled with pigeon or chicken with almonds, cinnamon, and sugar. Morocco's most surprising sweet-savory combination.
